Traveling with crochet

21/01/2026

A few days ago, I was traveling by bus when I noticed a young woman sitting a few seats in front of me, calmly knitting with a pair of needles in her hands. The image caught my attention so much that a thought crossed my mind: what about crocheting while traveling?

I started to wonder how many other people take their crochet projects with them on the bus, train, or tram. How many bags hide unfinished squares, scarves, or amigurumi that are created between one stop and the next. Travel is often considered "dead time"—waiting, transfers, delays. But crocheting can turn it into something completely different.

Crocheting on the go has its charm. You don't have to carry heavy equipment with you, just a hook, yarn, and a project that doesn't require complicated counting. Buses and trains are ideal places for simple patterns, repetitive rows, and meditative work. Plus, your hands are busy and your mind can rest.

Of course, crocheting on the go also has its challenges. Cramped seats, limited space, occasional curious glances from fellow passengers. But that's all part of it. Sometimes someone will pluck up the courage to strike up a conversation. Crocheting thus becomes an inconspicuous bridge between people who otherwise would not exchange a word.

Personally, the young lady on the bus inspired me to look at my own travels differently. Why not use the time spent in transit for something creative? Why not turn waiting into the joy of a gradually growing project?

Do you take your crochet with you when you travel by bus or train? Or does your yarn stay at home, waiting for you to sit down in your armchair? Maybe next time you see someone crafting between stops, it will inspire you as much as it did me. Because you can craft even when you're on the go.
